The best thing about a small bathroom is less surface area to clean each week! The 3-piece bathroom at our Graystone Beach cottage isn’t tiny (9'x5'), but you wouldn’t be able to waltz in there. This week we’re happy to share with you our small bathroom design plans for the room which we’re tackling as a part of the 6-week long One Room Challenge.
We are tackling the complete makeover on a tight budget and limited timeframe. The cottage is over 2 hours away from our homes, so we’ve been cramming the DIY project into a few long weekends. Here’s an overview of our timeline for the challenge:
Week 1: The Before Photos
Week 2 (you are here): The Inspiration, Design Plans and our Sponsors
Week 3: Small Bathroom Remodel Tips
Week 4: DIY Wine Cork Bath Mat
Week 5: Painting the Bathroom Vanity and New Faucets
Week 6: The Final Reveal!

Our inspiration for this coastal cottage tropical bathroom oasis
This coastal vignette by Pamela @homeonferhill pretty much sums up our design goals for this small bathroom remodel: neutral, natural tones and textures with touches of teal in the accents. We're aiming for a relaxing beach-themed spa space. Here are some more design elements for the room:
1. Nautical rope round mirror *
2. Brand new plank vinyl flooring (see below!)
3. Teal toned accessories
4. New light fixture
5. DIY resin cabinet knobs inspired by these lovelies on Etsy *
6. Sea-inspired driftwood art
Our generous One Room Challenge Sponsors
We’re so happy to be partnering with these great companies for this renovation:
Flooring: The Home Depot Canada and Allure ISOCORE
The current floor in the bathroom is tile. Unfortunately in the summer, when the tiles are cold and there's lots of warm moisture in the air, the floor sweats (gets wet) and becomes slippery. We'll talk more about this in an upcoming post, but needless to say, we wanted to address this in the remodel.
When we saw Brooke over at BrooklynBerryDesigns.com install Allure ISOCORE plank vinyl flooring in her basement we were curious. Learning that we could install it right over the existing tiles won us over because we have a limited amount of time to complete the entire remodel.
We are planning to install the Allure ISOCORE brushed white plank vinyl flooring. Allure ISOCORE is a Home Depot Advantage product and exclusively available at the Home Depot. We're happy to collaborate with both of these companies on the bathroom remodel and will share our experience with installing the floor soon!
Bathroom Faucets and Fixtures: Delta Faucet Canada
We are beyond excited for the opportunity to collaborate with Delta Faucet Canada and give the new coastal bathroom a cohesive look with these beautiful fixtures and faucets we've selected from their Ashlyn Collection. The pieces are classic yet modern and the Brilliance® Stainless finish has just enough sheen. We can't wait to show you to installation process in the coming weeks!
Paint for the Cabinet Makeover and DIY Projects: DecoArt
We've truly enjoyed working with DecoArt Americana Decor line of paints over the past few months (check out our tutorial on how to refinish a dresser without sanding) and are looking forward to upcycling the existing dresser similar to the pictured find from Amazon!
Touches of Teal Bathroom Remodel Progress so Far
Since the cottage is over two hours away from our homes (did we mention that?) the bulk of this reno will be happening over a couple of long weekends! We got a little head start on the remodel during spring break last month when we took our the old shower enclosure, vanity, medicine cabinet and towel bar/fixtures. In the meantime, our parents have removed the tiles from the walls, added and taped/sanded new drywall and primed/painted the walls and trim.
You can see how quickly we dismantled the old shower enclosure in our latest little YouTube video!
We had huge plans for this upcoming Easter weekend which included installing a new shower enclosure, then the floor as well as refinishing the cabinet. However, it looks like the shower kit won't arrive in time so we're unsure of how much we'll actually be able to accomplish while there over this Easter long-weekend. We may have more time for turkey-eating than we thought we would!
